Cuddington Casuals at Overton Recreation Ground, Sutton, Surrey
Saturday 7 June 2003 (start 2pm - weather was sunny)
40 overs each

Andy Fletcher was captain for this match. We lost the toss and Cuddington elected to bat on a sloping but good batting track.
David O'Brien (1 wicket for 48 off 7 overs) and Jess Sharling (0 wickets for 50 runs off 8 overs) opened the bowling with Dave taking an early wicket with the score on 5 runs in the 1st over. The number 2 and 3 batsmen then put on a 124 run partnership off 20 overs before Steve O'Neil had the number 2 bat (scored 39 runs) LBW and Keith took a good catch off Graham Pinkney's bowling at mid on to dismiss the number 3 bat (scored 74 runs). At this stage, the score was 144 for 3 off 24 overs.
Cuddington continued to score runs at a steady rate scoring another 98 runs off 16 overs for the loss of a further 3 wickets to end the innings on a very respectable 242 for 6; the number six batsmen for Cuddington made an unbeaten 49.
The pick of the bowlers were Steve O'Neil who took 2 wickets for 39 runs off 8 overs, Graham Pinkney who took one wicket for an economical 37 runs off 8 overs and Brian Douglass who, having been brought on later in the innings, was only able to bowl 4 overs but took 2 wickets for only 19 runs conceded - one of Brian's wickets was caught behind by Steve Vickery who put on a good acrobatic performance throughout the afternoon. Viv Luis also bowled 5 overs conceding 50 runs with no wicket taken.
The standard of Morden's fielding was good and Cuddington were very lucky (or very adept) at finding the gaps both along the ground and in the air - from my recollection, no chances of a catch were missed which is significant since a lot of runs were scored by Cuddington having been initially driven through the air. Also of note was that Morden conceded 37 extras including 24 No balls, 8 byes and 3 leg byes. This was somewhat offset, however, by Cuddington conceding 26 extras (including 14 wide balls) during the Morden innings.

After a hearty tea supplied by Graham Pinkney (including a notorious jar of sliced lemons), Morden set to the task of winning the match but needed to score 6 runs per over. Andy Spencer and Andy Fletcher started with a steady and solid start but Andy Fletcher was bowled in the 7th over for 7 runs with the score on 22. Brian Douglass (scored 60) and Andy Fletcher (scored 57) then put on a 112 run partnership off 20 overs. Brian played a typical innings of measured aggression punishing any wayward deliveries, tempered with respect for the good delivery. Andy Spencer played an innings full of technically correct and elegant strokes; one of his most effective was the square cut/drive onto the off side.
Brian was eventually out caught and bowled in the 27th over while trying to accelerate the run rate and this brought Viv Sharma to the crease with the score on 134 for 2. Andy Fletcher, tired by a long innings made under a hot sun finally succumbed in the 30th over (caught behind) with the score on 139 for 3. At this stage, Morden required over 10 runs an over to win. Keith Pilgrim was unlucky to get out, driving off the back foot to point. Viv Sharma (scored 12) was out LBW to a ball moving off the seam with the score on 159 for 5 in the 34th over. Vic Luis made a quick fire 6 and was out caught at mid off going for a big shot with the score on 176 for 6 after 37 overs. Replacing Viv and Vic respectively were Steve O'Neil and Jess Sharling. Steve made a measured but quick 16 runs off 5 overs before he was caught in the gully. Jess demonstrated his renowned capability to score runs quickly by making 21 not out in just 3 overs. With the benefit of hindsight, it would have been intriguing to see whether Jess could have sufficiently accelerated the Morden run rate at the time Brian Douglass was dismissed in the 27th over. Morden finished on 205 for 7 off their 40 overs - match lost.

Overall, this was a good performance by Morden. The bowlers were somewhat punished by a strong batting line up. The team performed well in the field and some notable batting performances yielded a very respectable, albeit insufficient, score. An enjoyable day was had by all and particular thanks are due to Graham Pinkney for sorting out the tea.

PECKHAM RYE CC, May 31st 2003 - lost by 8 wickets
Mad dogs and Englishmen aplenty at the Wallington Sports and Social for this early start against Peckham Rye. On the hottest day of the year, MCCC won the toss and, with one eye on the shade of the pavillion, elected to bat. The lottery that is the Conference soon became apparent as Peckham's opening attack bowled a tight line and length. Morden's start, however, was solid with Andy Spencer laying an early foundation (15) despite loosing Andy Fletcher early on. But with Brian in, Morden lost a few quick wickets, firstly Andy S then Imran, Richard Spencer and Steve O'Neil in succession. Brian carried the fight (36), and accompanied by a new bat, a lower middle order revival and a wagging tail posted a presentable score. Vic Luis was the pick with a heavy-hitting 45, his best batting performance for the club, while Steve Vickery (16) and debutant Chris Malley (12) pitched in well.

After tea, it soon became apparent that we needed an additional 50+ to make this a real contest. Despite an early wicket for Steve O'Neil, trapping the opener lbw in the fourth over, Peckham picked off the runs relatively easily. However some tight bowling from Graham (0-22) and Jess (0-23) kept the opposition on their toes. Lobster sun-burn aside, an enjoyable afternoon. Thanks to all that played.

OLD TIFFINIANS SUN JUNE 01
Losing the toss TIFFS decided to bat first, opening with joe and chris,
some good tight bowling without any just reward.
Halden then Jonno coming on at first change, Jonno claiming the
first wicket of the day bowling out their No 2 (110 - 1), another change
in attack saw Graham on for Halden who inturn claimed their No 3.
with TIFFS reeling at 191 - 2 the rain set in and they duely declared.
After tea the weather brightened up a bit, edgar and barik opening up
the batting, Edgar the first to fall at 5 then next over barik going for 4
steve o (0) tony (8) joe (2) and halde (5), now our turn to start reeling
at 35-6 .
come in Jonno and steve v putting on a 50 partnership before steve v
being bowled thus leading to another collapse, Jonno going the next over
for 43, chris lasting an over going for 6 andy (0) leaving graham on his own
ending the day 91 all out.
Fair play to TIFFS fielding for 17 overs in the pouring rain just to get us out
