The Saturday 11 visited the impressive NPL ground for this encounter. In a declaration game, Andy Fletcher won the toss and, on an overcast humid afternoon, put the home side in. A refreshing blend of Corinthians old and new opened the bowling - stalwart Jim Patel from one end and newboy Rajesh Ganesh at the other. Both got off to a tight start and set the foundations for what was to come. Despite not taking early wickets against a technically accomplished opening pair, both tied the run-rate up well. Raj was the first to break through (his only wicket in a fine spell of 10-2-20-1) tempting the batsman into a mistimed pull to Richard Spencer at square leg. Richard's catch was typical of a tight fielding performance from Morden. Richard himself took three catches, while Viv Sharma, Graham Pinkney and Andy Fletcher all held chances.
 
Murali Krishna and Graham Pinkney were the bowling changes and kept up the pressure. Krishna bowled a spell of 13 miserly overs without success, while Graham, a bit looser run-wise, picked up six crucial wickets. Another fine performance. Steve O'Neil got in on the act with a couple of late wickets as NPL declared on 167-9.

With a fairly late declaration, MCCC needed to score consistently to make the total. Viv and Andy got us off to a solid start with an opening partnership of 42. Andy was the first to go playing on for 25. Brian Douglass, in his familiar number 3 slot got moving after a steady start. Having lost partners in Viv (for a valuable 26) and Imran (5), he was joined by Steve O'Neil. Between them, they swung the game Morden's way. Steve's innings of 32 contained no less than three sixes, coming to end with another attempt which just failed to clear long-on. Richard Spencer hit the winning runs, with Brian ending on an excellent 59 not out.

MCCC v's Reigate Priory 5th XI @ Friends Provident Ground, Dorking - Match result WON

This weekend found MCCC having such a shortage of players that one match on the weekend had to be cancelled. The only game being played was against Reigate Priory fifths on the beautiful Friends Provident ground in Dorking. With the usual Saturday Skipper and his deputies not available, Imran Ahmad found himself back at the helm. Damish Umar was making his MCCC debut on this occassion.

The weather was a warm 25c with only sparse cloud crossing the Surrey hills. The match format was a strange one - 40 overs a side, but with no limit on bowling. Imran Ahmad won the toss and put Reigate into bat. At the same venue last year, MCCC found themselves bowled out cheaply. So we thought let's try and chase the runs this time. It's something we have been doing well under the direction Andy Fletcher this year. 

Opening the MCCC bowling attack, was Rajesh Ganesh from the Box Hill end, partnered by Tush, from the Friends Provident end. Rajesh got into the groove immediately moving the ball off the seam. The first wicket to fall was off the 2nd ball of the game, when the Reigate opener playing onto the wicket from a good length ball delivered by Rajesh. The other opening batter was soon walking back to the pavilion after being well caught near the extra cover boundary by debutant Damish Umar from bowling of Tush. This early wicket for Tush really gave him confidence after his bowling spell on the previous week.

Bowling with good speed, Tush took another 3 wickets including a couple of vicious yorkers taking those stumps out. The other wicket was a sharp catch by Brian "The Gazelle" Douglass at gully. With the bowlers keep a tight line, the captain could afford to set only 2 leg side fielders with everyone else on the off side. The attacking field placement paid off when Reigate tried to steal a quick single, Johno fired in a sharp return throw to Tush. This was turning out to be a promising start for MCCC whilst Reigate was loosing wickets at regular intervals without scoring rapidly.

It was almost the 20th over before the first bowling change. Krishna Murali was the first change to come on. Krishna's quicker ball was a wonder to watch whilst Reigate was finding the going tough with 2 quick LBW's. Krishna wrapped up the Reigate Priory innings on 92. Opening the batting for MCCC was the in-form Johno Petit and Darmish Umar. After a brisk start and some flashy shots from both openers, Darmish was first to go when a yorker squeezed through from the steady bowling of Azher. Brian was in at number 3 to settle things down playing conservatively. Reigate's Azher carried on his fine line trapping Brian Douglass leg before after one kept low. Johno fell soon after from a full length ball taking out his off stump. By this stage MCCC had managed to keep the score ticking over. Next up was Imran at batting at number 5. Richard Spencer became Azher’s 4th victim with another full length ball getting through the defences. MCCC were starting to wobble! Ali Heart came in number 6, hitting some quick runs including big six over extra cover. With the victory in sight the skipper didn’t want to waste too much time but sadly gave his wicket away with the MCCC score on 88. Ali Herat lead us home scoring the winning runs with a boundary.

Cuddington Casuals Ease To Victory Over MCCC
Saturday 10 July MCCC vs Cuddington Casuals at Home – Raynes Park Sports Ground

On a rain affected game, MCCC played its first match on the new home ground. We won the toss and elected to bat.

MCCC made 112 all out off 38 overs. Only Mark Bartram (37), Steve O’Neil (13), Raj Ganesh (14) and Graham Pinkney (14) made it into double figures. The Cuddington bowling attack mixed medium-quick bowling which swung, moved off the seam and bounced with slow but accurate bowling by their captain who took 4 for 24.

With a small total to defend, MCCC opened with Vic Luis (6-2-27-0) and Dave O’Brien (8-1-42-1). Graham Pinkney (8-3-20-2) was the pick of the bowlers and he was joined by Steve O’Neil (4-1-15-1) and Tony Hammond (1-0-12-0). Cuddington easily made the required total of 113 for 4 wickets off 27 overs.

Special thanks go to Steve O’Neil for making arrangements for tea. It was disappointing that only 5 MCCC players were able to join the opposition for drinks after the match.

Bank Of England Play It Safe For A Draw
Saturday 26 June MCCC vs Bank of England at BOE ground, Roehampton
Declaration game

On a rain affected day, we made our annual visit to the excellent Bank of England ground. We won the toss and MCCC elected to bat. Only three MCCC batsmen faced the BOE attack. Jonathan Pettit and Mark Bartram opened and made a 75 run partnership before Mark (26) was bowled by a good turning ball off J. Kendall. Majid Rafiq (100*) came to the crease and he and Jonathan (96) took the total to 220 for 1. Jonathan was caught on the deep mid-off boundary whilst going for a 6 to take him to a century. We declared at that point having faced 28 overs.

By our reckoning, our declaration would have left at least 40 overs to allow MCCC to bowl BOE out. Vic Luis (10O, 4M, 30R, 0W) and Krishna Murali (10O, 6M, 11R, 3W) opened the bowling. Krishna took two early wickets with the score on 12 for 2. Graham Pinkney ((7O, 2M, 28R, 2W) and Steve O’Neil ((7O, 2M, 16R, 1W) took 3 wickets between them with the score then on 58 for 6. The BOE no 1 bat, Howatt (48) was joined by Redding at no 7 (68*) who resisted the MCCC bowling onslaught before Tony Hammond (5O, 1M, 27R, 1W) dismissed the opener with the score at 102 for 6. Krishna took another wicket with the score on 112 for 8 but even the introduction of Jonathan Pettit, Majid Rafiq, Mark Bartram and Imran Ahmad into the attack, bowling 10 overs between them, could not help clinch the match. BOE finished on 148 for 7 off 44 overs. Match Drawn.

MCCC v's Old Manhattans (Home Fixture 40 overs a side)

An embarrassing chain of events preceded this weekends fixture against Old Manhattans of Surbiton. Firstly we did not sufficiently check the standard of the pitch and secondly we started with only six players as most had been stranded by the ineptitude of the London Underground system. As we began the game the pitch was in a poor state with water seeping out of the ground as pressure was exerted. Winning the toss the opposition was put into bat and a tight opening spell from Graham Pinckney allowed Morden to exert early pressure. As new players arrived the skipper removed himself from the attack and finally we began to take control. Krishnan, Vic Luis and Imran made significant in roads in to the manhattan top order. Top quality slow bowling enabled us to restrict the opposition to 95 off of the first 32 overs. As the skipper bought himself back into the attack Old Manhattans took advantage and with a final flourish finished the game on 140.

The Morden innings started badly with Mark Bartram caught in the first over looking to hit the opening bowler out of the attack. Morden then gained control with the technically good Abdul and imposing Imran. Both players took Morden to the verge of victory with Abdul out in the forties and Imran making 52. After a slight wobble in batting the Skipper redeemed himself after his poor bowling and smashed a quick fire 17 to lead Morden to victory. Good fielding, excellent bowling and strong batting ensured a very satisfying victory well done to all players even those who were late!
