Here are the 2008 Motions submitted so far. Please remember when submitting motions you need to propose seconder.

Proposed by Steve O’Neil Ramsadeo

Introduction

I have been asked by the Chairman to provide some guidance on the rational behind the proposed change of name for the Club.

I am proposing as a motion at the 2008 AGM that we change the Club’s name to Wimbledon Corinthians. I have sought a senior view from the Rugby Club and there would be no objection to the change. Their interest is having our membership and support in ‘corporate’ matters.

It was agreed earlier in the year to delay any formal discussion on changing the name of the Club until the end of the current season, especially as 2008 is our 10th anniversary. Effectively, it would be a great milestone to complete a decade under the Morden Corinthians banner, and then move on to debating the proposed change. It is now that time to make the case for change.

The case for Changing our name

I believe we’ve reached a critical stage in the Club’s growth within which this matter deserves serious consideration.

It will be a positive move for the Club as a whole to embrace such a move – not for snobbish value or just for the sake of change but for promoting and involving commercial opportunities, and having a strong ‘brand’ with which to move forward.

One of the obvious commercial benefits is sponsorship. That said, it would help our cause to have strong selling points - such as the ones we progressing –

  • Youth Development Programme
  • Growth of our league teams and initiatives
  • Stable home ground
  • Sponsorship developments & initiatives
  • Good links with the local media
  • Continued growth of membership
  • Excellent website initiatives

These are just a few examples and there is still work to be done in many of the above areas. However, potential sponsors would be encouraged and want to be associated with a Club like ours – which has a vision and is professional and forward thinking.

Why ‘Wimbledon’:

The name almost speaks for itself…

  • It has a large business base – ideal for sponsorship opportunities
  • Highly recognizable geographically – SW19
  • It’s a positive brand with high recall and awareness
  • A local council which is keen to develop youth cricket in partnership with our Club
  • It is memorable world-wide for its Tennis tournament
  • It has renowned heritage and community links – including the Village, Wimbledon Common, Canizario Park

Conclusion

Changing our name doesn’t mean we are moving away from the Rugby Club. We are still going to be affiliated to RSPSC, supporting each other in activities and initiatives to mutual benefit. RSPSC is not too concerned about our name, so long as we lend our support and maintain our affiliation, which we are happy to continue, the relationship is safe.

By also retaining the Corinthians in the title, the Club is not losing its history, links and achievements – these are all faithfully documented.

The proposal for change is simply one of strategic commercial opportunity, and the above values are all robust, positive images with which to be associated both for the Club and for the organisations and its partners.

AGM MOTION from Steve O Ramsadeo:

I nominate Jim Patel to be accepted as an Honorary Member of the Club

As Jim has retired from Club cricket I believe it would be fitting for the Club to
bestow this award upon him in recognitation for his devotion, passion and
support that he has given to the Club over the many years of valued service.
As an Honorary Member, Jim would not be required to pay any membership fee whatsoever.

AGM MOTION from Steve O Ramsadeo:

I propose that Graham Pinkney be officially recognised as the Founder of
Morden Corinthians.

It was Graham that set up the Club and organised fixtures in the first two seasons.
His enthusiasm and early work should be recognised and I feel this would
be a fitting acknowledgement for Graham in the Club's history.
