Morden Corinthians Cricket Club – Season 2004
Captain’s report
As Saturday captain, I submit this report in readiness for the Annual General Meeting.
Broadly this season has been a successful one, with a number of good results and new fixtures, which I hope the club will be able to establish and maintain in years to come. Epsom Methodists aside, the majority of the teams encountered by the Saturday XI have been of a similar standard to MCCC, with the majority well contested and all played in good spirit.
I would like to thank the Saturday vice captains, Viv Sharma and Dave O’Brien for all their help and support on and off the field and for skippering when I have been unavailable. In addition, my thanks to Steve O’Neil for his ongoing support and Graham Pinkney for lugging the kit-bag around when I have not had access to a car.
We have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat (who could forget Riverside?) and defeat from the jaws of victory (Foots Cray will live long in the memory), at all times upholding the values of the game without diminishing our competitive nature. Standards with the bat and ball were, as ever, a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Catching and fielding has, in my view, steadily improved over the course of the season. I would like to thank Jono Petit for his support with improving performance in the field, through his initial pre-season session and in setting a standard in the field that we could all work towards.
We were fortunate to welcome a number of new regulars to the Saturday team, many of whom have made a significant impact. Murali Krishna’s success with the ball was recognised by the annual awards panel, while Rajesh Ganesh, Mark Bartram and Abdul Hussain have all made significant contributions on a Saturday in this their first full season with the club.
The new home ground has been a welcomed development and I hope the club continues to establish this as a base, particularly on the social side.
Finally, my personal thanks to all those who have played this season.

I am very grateful to all of the Club Officers of 2004, especially for their valued support and assistance that they have given me during the course of the season.
Our Captains Andy (Saturday) and Charlie (Sunday) have led us admirably on and off the field of play with bags of energy, motivation, and commitment to the Corinthian spirit, which is embodied within our mission statement. Our vice-skips David, Viv and Brian are also to be commended in their role, as each ably stepped in with seamless ease, when the need arose, to lead the team with vigour.
On the admin side my thanks to Steve V, Majid, Imran and Penny for their much-valued assistance. Majid’s bereavement for his father has understandably kept him away, and we expect to catch up with him at the Club’s annual dinner in November. A card of condolence, on behalf of the Club, was sent to Majid and his family.
I have to say that Jim has taken to the role of Fixture Secretary like a shop-keeper takes to everything marked half-price at the cash ‘n’ carry. Jim will finalise the accounts in the absence of Majid. Huge thanks to Jim as well for all his behind-the-scene support that he has given to me and to the Club as a whole. My thanks also to Tony for his diligent work in recording the stats, each and every week and making sense of it all.
The support of Keith and Brian in their undertaking of the two new Secretarial posts – Social and Membership, respectively, were immensely helpful to the Club’s admin and progress.
Although we had to abandon the home ground experiment at Greenacres, Warlingham, it was certainly worth giving it a try. However, we quickly moved forward to arrange a new home ground at Raynes Park. We are now planning a total of 14 home games in the 2005 season.
How we did in 2004 – our goals and achievements – in brief:
? New (more local) home ground, with club house and bar facility
? New social event, namely the barbecue
? More new clubs added to our fixtures
? New role and responsibility of Social and Membership secretaries
? Better process for follow-up and support of new players joining us
? New, fine-tuned team selection process
? New categories added in order to further improve the scope of our stats
? New look to website, having just invested in properly hosted service
? Improved and simplified the submission of match reports (see new form on website)
In closing, there are more challenges ahead, and together we will, of course, meet them in the best tradition of our Corinthian spirit, aiming high to grow and to ensure the future of our Club’s future.
I extend my gratitude to all of our Officers and players for their support that they have given to me and to Club, which has together contributed to another successful season – and with a few more wins for us all to shout about as well. It’s good to know and share in the experience that our officers and regular players all played a part in moving the Club forward. Enjoy the break…
Kind regards

The migration of the club website to the new webspace is going well. All the main pages are now done. I am in the middle of designing a couple of forms for use on the web. One of the forms is to automate match reports and the other relates to site feedback. The number of pop-ups on the site should have been reduced. There's only 1 more to get rid off which I'll probably do in the next couple of days.

As part of the future strategy, the club is investing for the first time in paid for website space. Up until now, our website was sitting with the free service provider Lycos. By moving to a subscription service, provided by 1&1 Internet, we can now offer a number of noticiable improvements that will be available shortly as we migrate to the new webspace, some of these are detailed below
- No annoying pop ups
- Faster website performance to support more traffic (10GB per month)
- More webspace (600mb)
- Complete breakdown of website traffic (who's viewing what pages on the website and
for how long and when)
- dedicated forwarding email addresses such as info@mordencorinthians.org.uk (we can define the email addressess)
We see our website as a good source of attracting new membersip via the internet. There's also the possibility of getting sponsorship through the website.
Full details of the package we are going for is available here
If you have any specific questions about the evolution of the club website over the coming weeks or have any specific suggestions on how to improve aspects of the site please drop Imran Ahmad a line at info@mordencorinthians.org.uk

There was a good turnout at last nights annual club awards at the Horse and Groom Pub. Johno Petit was presented with a special award for his services to the club as he'll be moving away and unable to play for us next Year. Tony 'Statto' Hammond got the best individual bowling performance. Krishna Murali, in his first year as a member got the best bowling average honor and the special award for notable achievement in the year. Brian 'The Gazelle' Douglass retained the most runs scored in the season award with another 1000+ runs. The ever trusted nagging line of Graham 'Flipper' Pinkney again took the most wickets in the season. For the junior award, Ali Herat had improved leaps and bounds to take this trophy. He's batting and fielding were off particular achievement this year. We all enjoyed his speech! Johno cleaned up with 3 more awards for Player of the year and Batsman of the year, and Highest individual innings score. We hope he has room in the trophy cabinet! Mark Bartram was awarded for the fielder of the year for his performance. Mark also had a good year with the bat. Sam Cope with his safe pair of hands to the catches award, again having another solid year with the bat and ball also.
Thanks goes to all those who helped arrange the evening. In particular the club would like to thank the Chairman, Steve O'Neil for arranging the venue; Tony Hammond for doing a diligent job with the season stats and Jim Patel for sorting out the Trophies.
Photos for the awards evening are here.
The next Club event is the AGM where you get to have say on the club's future development so please make every effort to attend. All motions should be sent by email to the Club Chairman.agm1
