Morden Corinthians Cricket Club – Season 2004
Captain’s report
As Saturday captain, I submit this report in readiness for the Annual General Meeting.
Broadly this season has been a successful one, with a number of good results and new fixtures, which I hope the club will be able to establish and maintain in years to come. Epsom Methodists aside, the majority of the teams encountered by the Saturday XI have been of a similar standard to MCCC, with the majority well contested and all played in good spirit.
I would like to thank the Saturday vice captains, Viv Sharma and Dave O’Brien for all their help and support on and off the field and for skippering when I have been unavailable. In addition, my thanks to Steve O’Neil for his ongoing support and Graham Pinkney for lugging the kit-bag around when I have not had access to a car.
We have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat (who could forget Riverside?) and defeat from the jaws of victory (Foots Cray will live long in the memory), at all times upholding the values of the game without diminishing our competitive nature. Standards with the bat and ball were, as ever, a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Catching and fielding has, in my view, steadily improved over the course of the season. I would like to thank Jono Petit for his support with improving performance in the field, through his initial pre-season session and in setting a standard in the field that we could all work towards.
We were fortunate to welcome a number of new regulars to the Saturday team, many of whom have made a significant impact. Murali Krishna’s success with the ball was recognised by the annual awards panel, while Rajesh Ganesh, Mark Bartram and Abdul Hussain have all made significant contributions on a Saturday in this their first full season with the club.
The new home ground has been a welcomed development and I hope the club continues to establish this as a base, particularly on the social side.
Finally, my personal thanks to all those who have played this season.
